When people complain about the treadmill being boring, it is probably because they do the same workout over and over.fitness treadmill equipmentIt is perfectly designed for all kind of body weight and can sustain more heavy duty exercises without any problems. Here are two great treadmill workouts you can use if you are pressed for time. The most important feature of a manual treadmill is the cost. foldable treadmillToday, the fitness treadmill is an affordable piece of exercise equipment. If you've been running for a while you already know that outdoor running is not always possible due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances, that's when your treadmill becomes your best friend. They all tend to be very highly rated in most home treadmill reviews. The best treadmills on the market combine an amazing and effective workout, make efficient use of space, and are affordable. Treadmills, like all other at home fitness machines, have come a long way. Your size and weight matter when choosing treadmill exercise equipment.

I would love to see a graph of Anon#15's experiment; Rubik's cube solving time versus treadmill speed! This should be an XKCD strip.

Interesting how different people find different things boring, different things relatively enjoyable, and different levels of synergy between different things (walking running, bike riding... audiobooks/lectures, brainless tv shows, language flash cards). I, for one, enjoy running while listening to the swing/waltz/polka music that I often dance to (I imagine that I am dancing, and this activates the part of my brain that has to creatively improvise moves, so I'm always thinking "What do I do next? No, not that, I did that already" just like when I'm actually dancing to those songs), or walking while listening to audiobooks or NPR podcasts. I did recently buy a treadmill and am experimenting with exercising + TV watching. (So far, it's not as enjoyable. I find myself looking at my watch or at the distance counter more often than when listening to dance music or podcasts). I'm definitely going to try this exercise + language study idea.

Let me point out the following: Some people are saying "physical activity + mental activity" as though "mental activity" only uses up one resource. But that's inaccurate. Just as physical activity can use just the legs, or just the arms (and this means that you can sometimes do two different kinds of physical activity at once, but sometimes not), mental activity may or may not require resources that are also required by some physical activity. This reminds me of one of Feynman's autobiographies where he talks about how some people can count and talk at the same time, and some people can count and draw at the same time, but for each person it tends to be one but not the other, since some people count verbally (saying the names of numbers in their minds) while others count visually (imagining a belt of numbers going by, or a display that shows one number and then the next). So depending on what kind of exercise you like and what mental capacities it draws upon, the mental activity that best synergizes with the exercise might be the one that uses the same mental capacities... or the mental capacities "left over". I wonder which one.

On a somewhat unrelated note: I love RossInDetroit's story (#29) about the required 200m walk to get tech support, and figuring things out yourself on the way. Thinking about how to explain my problem to someone often makes the solution clear. When I'm working through a personal issue I will often write a long email to 1-4 close friends about it, but less than half of those emails end up actually getting sent, because as I write the email it often becomes clear to me what my reasonable friends would advise. It works in my professional life too. My group regularly meets so we can tell each other about our work, issues we have been having, discoveries we have made, etc. (We develop Fracture Mechanics models through lab tests and computer simulations). One could easily dismiss these meetings as a waste of time, having a "Just let me get back to work instead of having to document it and make Powerpoints about it" attitude... but it's always surprising how much progress is made in the week before you have to present. In those meetings we often hear "The project ran into this and that problems a couple weeks ago, but as I was putting this presentation together, it occurred to me to try such and such approaches to overcome those obstacles. That's next on the to-do list".

Kara DioGuardi opened up to Women’s Health Magazine for their upcoming April issue. In it, the 'American Idol' judge discussed her battle with an eating disorder, her healthy eating habits, exercise routine and personal growth.

She battled an eating disorder in her early twenties: “I’d pretty much clean out the refrigerator. Food was my drug of choice. It anesthetized me so I wouldn’t have to feel whatever I was feeling. I’d stuff myself full of sugar and fall asleep.”

Healthy eating habits: “The more roughage you eat, the more it fills you up.”

She drinks lots of water:
“Two huge bottles a day, minimum. I have them around – one upstairs, one in the car – to force me to remember.

Her exercise routine: “Two miles of running or 25 minutes of cardio – boxing, treadmill, step-ups, walking lunges, sprints. I mix it up. And weight training is important as you get older. You build muscle which burns fat when you’re at rest.”

Her loved ones are honest with her: “Someone [close to me] said, ‘You may want to work on your arms – they’re a little jiggly’…The people in my life have no qualms about telling me when I don’t look great.”

After getting her first job in the music industry:
“I started to feel better about my life. I was answering phones and getting water but I also learned about the music business.”

On her plans to take some stuff off her plate when she has kids…“It’ll be a lot of pressure being in charge of a little soul who will someday judge me if I’m not there for the school play.”

She’s finally content…“For the first time in my life, I’m content. I don’t feel the need to prove myself anymore.”

Are you a fan of Kara? Do you enjoy her on 'American Idol'?

How to chose commercial treadmill You want

Kissing Monkeys by Janety el planety

Well, this is a piece of fitness equipment that will. When you buy this treadmill, you know you are getting something that will work for life. One of the most important factors in using a treadmill to increase your fitness level is the variety of your workouts. If you've been running for a while you already know that outdoor running is not always possible due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances, that's when your treadmill becomes your best friend. Any of the above mentioned treadmills can make a great choice if you are serious about either walking or running your way to fitness. However, there are a large number of treadmills on the market. Because of this, treadmill exercise equipment has remained very popular and has continued to be a top seller in the fitness equipment industry. There are all types of treadmill exercise equipment out there.

Take Zillow.com, the real estate Web site, where people can hunt for prices and other details about houses. Zillow’s iPhone app adds GPS. People walking their dog through the neighborhood can snoop on the prices of their neighbors’ homes.

“It’s a way better experience in the field than on the PC,” said Rich Barton, Zillow’s chief executive. “When you’re walking or driving, you get estimates or homes recently sold — stuff you can’t see.”

Nine million people visit Zillow’s Web site each month, according to the company. In less than a year, its app has been downloaded by more than one million people, who view the details of two million individual homes on their phones each month.

Zillow is starting to sell mobile ads to local business and real estate agents, an opportunity that surprised the company. “We thought it would be an extension of our brand, not a money-making entity,” said Amy Bohutinsky, vice president of communications at Zillow.

A new version of the app released in February added rental listings and the ability to share Zillow’s home data, photos and property values on Facebook and Twitter.

Yelp’s mobile app is another example. Yelp’s Web site is useful for looking up reviews of the restaurant your date recommended or finding a good tailor near your home.

But on a cellphone, it gets a lot more useful. Yelp’s iPhone app uses GPS to search businesses near you and then gives you directions to get there, so you can find your way around in an unfamiliar city, for instance.

Earlier this week, I had five hours to kill between interviews in Silicon Valley. I needed to go somewhere nearby with wireless Internet, food and coffee. In two minutes, Yelp gave me the name of a cafe five minutes away, and I was armed with driving directions, recommendations on what to order and assurances from customers that there were electrical outlets and the proprietors did not mind people spending hours there.

Pandora is another example. As I wrote about on Monday, cellphone apps for the Internet radio site have brought 35,000 new listeners a month as people realize they can listen to music on their phones on the treadmill or in the car.

What other apps work best in their mobile form?

Obama’s Spacey Phone Call With Astronauts: Stephen Colbert “Excited” About His Treadmill in Space

February 17, 2010 6:37 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports:

President Obama called the astronauts on the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle Endeavor congratulating them for their “courage” in the latest mission.

“I just wanted to let you guys know how proud we are of all of you, what you guys have been accomplishing,” Obama said from a call from the Roosevelt Room this afternoon, “It is also a testimony to why continued space exploration is so important. And is part of the reason why my commitment to NASA is unwavering.”

Endeavour's crew will spend more a little more than a week at the space station and will do construction on the orbiting outpost – including a room called “Tranquility. The president said that he’s had a chance to look at what the module will do.

“Everybody here back home is excited about this,” Obama said joking “And Stephen Colbert at least is excited about his treadmill.”

NASA had invited submissions to name a node in the international space station. Stephen Colbert’s viewers voted and he won and the astronauts decided to name a treadmill after the comedian. They ultimately gave it the acronym: Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill for COLBERT.

The Colbert treadmill arrived at the space station four months ago.

ISSS Commander Jeff Williams explained that the module they will do construction on will serve an important function.

“The Tranquility module is also going to serve as a gym, as a hygiene area as a place the crew can maintain themselves for a long duration. And a long duration – living and working in space – is what the space station is all about. To do the research, and the science necessary to take us beyond earth’s orbit.”

With the completion of Tranquility the International Space Station will be about almost complete, Williams said.

“It really marks the end of the major assembly – or at least the US orbiting segment – as we transition into full utilization of this magnificent orbiting laboratory.”

The President was joined in the Roosevelt Room by 12 middle school students from Michigan, Florida, North Carolina and Nebraska, their teachers and Rep Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD).  The students are in Washington D.C. this week as part of 39 teams competing for the “Future City” engineering competition hosted by National Engineers Week and got to pose a few questions to the astronauts.

One student wanted to know what landmarks are recognizable from space. The president said he heard rumors they could see the Great Wall, but he’s not sure if that is true.

“Yes we can see a lot of the great landmarks,” Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi said, “We can see the Golden Gate bridge, the great skyscrapers of New York. And Grand Canyon is break taking.”

Another student asked about the thoughts and emotions of the astronauts while in space.

“It is a joyous, giddy moment at the same time you are disoriented,” one responded, “After that passes after a couple of days, for it was kind of a sense of wonder and you explore what you can do in zero gravity and the things you can see out the window.”

The astronaut added, “ After a little while after that you start to think about the people back on earth that are the most precious to you, then that little bit of loneliness can kick in.”

President Obama nodded as he listened to the astronaut speak about loneliness. Endeavour will depart the International Space Station Friday and is set to return to Earth on Sunday.
